Adirondacks Fall Color Week 2023
Adirondacks Fall Color Week - 2023

Thanksgiving is a perfect time to express thanks to family, friends and especially God. Throughout the year I have been blessed in so many ways and know the goodness, faithfulness, protection and love of God. I feel especially thankful this year because of recent events this year with a new granddaughter, Ahrie and celebrating our grandson, Weston’s 2nd birthday.

Last week I enjoyed another blessing when I was able to go plein air painting for the Plein Air Magazine Fall Color week in the Adirondacks with 100 other artists. What a spectacular week we had having ideal weather and the inspiring beauty of the Adirondack mountains in blazing autumn colors. I’m very thankful for the wonderful people I met, new friends and finally meeting Eric Rhoads(Founder and Chairman of Streamline Publishing) in person. Eric is so personable and fun to talk and be with.

The week started off with a bang, literally! Monday evening, on the way back to Saranac Lake Youth Camp where we were staying a pair of deer bolted out from the woods and one hit my driver’s side near the front headlight. There was no chance at all to stop in a split second. My passenger John Lynch and myself were not hurt but unfortunately I couldn’t say the same for one of the deer. I'm not sure where the other went. I stopped as soon as I could and right behind me a kind man stopped to see if he could help. He saw it all.

Surprisingly, the car was still driveable, the airbags did not deploy and the kind passerby pulled back the plastic and twisted metal in the wheel well which was scraping the tire. The headlight was broken and turn signal didn’t function. This meant I would need a new headlight but still could drive to where we needed to go. Thankfully, a garage was able to replace the headlight by Wednesday and was still able to participate in the painting event. Thanks to a kind new friend for driving me to get my fixed car. What disastrous things could have been if the car was undriveable. I do thank God for keeping us safe through that experience.

The days following were less dramatic and enjoyed painting with other artists.
Below, are some of the paintings from this trip.

Despite the traumatic experience, Fall Color Week 2023 will remain a “Deer” memory!
