July Landscape Painting - Plein Air & Studio
Each summer seems to go by faster than the year before. This year especially has gone by faster than a zipline! Workshops have been keeping me quite busy, with more on the horizon. Each workshop is such a great experience meeting wonderful people who enjoy plein air painting, making new friends and puns!
The Plein air Painting/Studio workshop in Haliburton was a fun week meeting some new artists and enjoyed gettng reacquainted with familiar faces. New and interesting locations were visited this summer, which made it even more fun. Below is a less typical subject that I don’t usually demonstrate, but sure enjoyed the challenge.
"Vintage Garden" - 11" X 14" - Acrylic on Panel
"Reflected Tranquility"
This was painted above Furnace falls; a new locaton I took the class to which was very scenic and an exercise in greens.
Oil on Panel
Painting my demo in Niagara on the Lake, Queen’s Royal Park. Happy to have my sisters come and bring Frank Paonessa, my 96 year old dad. Thanks dad, and to all who came!
The opening at the Niagara Pumphouse Solo Show Watermark was better than expected. So many friends, new and old, family, students and former coworkers surprised me by attending.
Two paintings found new homes and a plein air painting workshop followed the week after. Our first day was in studio due to unpredictable weather. Our second day was a perfect one with spectacular clouds the day before may have sent.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOP at the EXQUISITE MEMQUISIT LODGE
September is the month that I have a plein air painting workshop in beautiful Lake Nipissing based at Memquisit Lodge. A little gem that my wife and I enjoy vacationing at since 2011. Some of their patrons have been returning for more than 40 years! This year there were 10 participants from mostly Toronto and one couple from Delaware. The Terrific Ten! There were some nicely executed paintings over the 3-day workshop despite the weather.
Here are a few pics from the workshop.
Stephen Burke (Burkey) and his wife Anne Marvin made the trip all the way from Delaware. Burkey quite content with his effort at his easel. He even brought his fishing rod, a perfect holiday for one who loves painting and fishing! Thankfully he waited to fish after the demo! I spared the fish puns but the day was fin-tastic!
Anne Marvin savouring the sunshine finds her comfortable spot, locates her subject, and focuses on her watercolour painting on day one. Days to follow weren’t so sunny. Oh well, that’s plein air!
Beverly on the Bridge
No rain could dampen her vibrant spirit!
When the weather gets unpredictable and temperatures dipped, we could resort to Fireside Plein Air. It was always warm with this cozy group; (left to right) Denyse LaRose, Doris Anest, Beverly Topping, Donna Dooher, Me, Beth Chapman.
Anne joins the Fireside artists and displays her warm smile.
After a long day painting, the girls share haunting plein air tales around the campfire.
New to (porch) plein air, Donna Dooher cooked up this tonal beauty.
Talia Singer excited to try out her hot pink underpainting forthe first time!
A couple of my tonal studies using watercolour pencil and wash from the workshop and 12 X 16 acrylic on canvas board titled: Burkey’s Favorite, Lake Nipissing.
Doris works on some new techniques using the shaper.
Shelley taking a break from watercolour to play with acrylics which she handles quite skillfully.
Liz Walter makes a new friend.
Does he know Floyd?

It was a wet and nasty day, so Beth found some shelter in the Memquisit Lodge porch to paint. Is this still considered plein air or phone air? You make the call!
